hosting trial

So I ran across an offer from 1and1.com offering THREE YEARS FREE of webhosting. Pretty good timing in my opinion, considering my current contract with WorldWebHosters.com is set to run out in late January/early February. I’m running some tests now to how well I like it and so far, they’re getting a good 3 1/2 stars out of 5 possible. First of all, you can’t expect everything for free. Only one SQL database, which is one reason why I’m looking elsewhere in the first place. If I can add additional ones at a reasonable price, I’m all game for it. The big thing they have going though is 100 subdomains. For example, give these a try:

blog.wantmoore.net
contact.wantmoore.net
tutorials.wantmoore.net
[Note: As you can see, I’ve now registered wantmoore.net too!]

Currently, those just forward to their proper locations on wantmoore.com, but the possibilities here are endless! Before I even started my site earlier this year, that’s the sort of setup I wanted. The even bigger advantage though is that for now, I can setup the subdomains to redirect to wantmoore.com, BUT when the time comes to make the switch to their servers, it will be seamless. The content would be mirrored on the WorldWebHosters & 1and1 servers. Next I have to tell DNSCentral that I’ve changed webhosts and give them 1and1′s nameservers. Then, once the DNS entry change refreshes it’s way through the Internet, using 1and1′s nifty control panel I start pointing the subdomains to their own server. A seamless changeover! Brilliant I tell ya…. What would I do without me?!

[Right Brandon? Wouldn’t that work seamlessly like it sounds in my head? Just need to make sure before I do anything crazy…]

Ok, off to bed. More tests tomorrow. I’ve yet to actually upload any content to see how my site looks from their server. I also want to test Gallery and see if it works, as I would like to move my photo albums from the current Coppermine setup that I’m using. TATA for now!

pics and moving.

Well ladies and gentlemen, I have some sad news to report…

At some point in the next 24-48 hours, I’ll be dismantling my computer and rest of my office stuff to move it to the new house. The sad part is, Time Warner can’t come to connect RoadRunner/DVR/Digital Cable until NEXT FRIDAY MORNING. So, I’ll be broadband-less for a week! Someome save me! I think I’ll manage, but remember that if you need to talk to me, email probably won’t be a very rapid method over the next week. My postings at GOTC will probably be rather light as well. So if you need anything at all, don’t hesitate to use the new layout and inclusion of the SMS button to text me on my cell phone.

In the meantime, I’ve put the Titans-Panthers game pics online. So you can go and enjoy those while I’m away from blogging….

and it was so

Well you asked and you shall receive…

OK, so no one really asked for a new layout, but here it is anyway. I hope you like it, and if you do, I’d of course appreciate you using that newly found email button at the top of the column to the right and letting me know.

oh yeah…

One other thing…

I’m working on tweaking a new design for the layout here. The general layout will be the same, but I’m reworking the entire right-hand side menu to be more informative and functional. I’ve been working on and off for a week or two getting my stuff together, and if I can take an hour amongst the craziness this week, I’ll try to finish it up and reveal it all to you.

frustration continues

My email server is still down! I sent a quick message to tech support about 3 hours after it went down last night but of course they have been unable to write me back thanks to the server being down. I just sent them a flame message inquiring as to why they claim 99% uptime yet can’t follow through. I’m about to start searching for a web host I think, or maybe I’m considering hosting my own server. Regardless, here are the  requirements to be my host: 1) LINUX. I don’t care what flavor, but M$ is not even a remote consideration for my hosting needs. 2) mySQL/PHP support; 3) Catch-all forwarding; 4) at least 25 email addresses and FTP logins; 5) Shell access via Telnet/SSH.

If you can speak from personal experience about a reputable host, send me a note tothis address since my normal one is down.
