I updated my Thinkpad to Suse Linux 10.0 this morning and I have to say that I’m quite impressed. There’s the typical Novell stuff that comes with every release of Suse – new splash screens and wallpapers, but most notably is the HUGE speed increase that I’ve noticed in KDE. I’m guessing there was something rather dramatic changed in X.org or the ATI drivers, but no matter what it was, it’s quite welcome here on my laptop. Not that things were slow before, but there is virtually ZERO lag now when minizing, maximizing, or alt+tabbing between open programs. Color me happy so far. I just popped in the 10.0 CD’s and clicked “Update” instead of “New Install” and less than 30 minutes later, I’m back up and running. It’s that easy. So why not go upgrade yourself?
[...] So, I’m going back on something I said yesterday because when I got home last night, I realized that my built-in Intel 2200BG wireless doesn’t work anymore. Worked fine right out of the box with Suse 9.3 but it’s DOA with version 10.0 so far. My old config is still listed in YaST along with a second copy of the 2200BG card, but when I attempt to configure it, it tells me that I need to install the ipw-firmware. Sounds easy, but when YaST attempts to install it, it fails. Package isn’t available from any YaST repository that I’ve found. I guess I’m gonna get down and dirty with trying to recompile my kernel and the drivers from ipw2200.sourceforge.net. If anyone has suggestions, feel free to chime in. [...]
I am installing SUSE 10 on a VM, and being a Windows user, I did some research on the Web about SUSE, and it seems as if everyone LOVES it.
