I just picked up this incredible tip from a Slashdot comment and MUST share it with all of you. If you use OpenOffice like I do, you love it for what it does, but HATE it’s speed deficiency. Well, just open up OO and go to Tools->Options->Java and UNCHECK the box labeled “Use a Java runtime environment” and then restart OpenOffice. Notice anything? I noticed about a 400% faster startup – cutting my time from 20 seconds or more down to less than 5 seconds. Unbelieveable really. OO just wastes too much time at startup getting the JRE loaded into memory. Apparently Java is used for some backend scripting. I have a hunch I’ll never even know it’s missing.
Are you running 1.1.4?
Negative. A 2.0 beta of some sort. I need to get around to upgrading to the official 2.0 release. That tip should work on ANY version though.
Weird…I have no ‘java’ option. Unless I’m blind, it’s just not there.
I checked it all.
