Owen has posted quite a rant about where he stands in the epic Linux vs. Windows argument. I’m in same boat as he is, or at least in the same fleet of ships. I particularly enjoyed the next to last paragraph. Personally, I use Linux as my primary operating system on a daily basis, but I use Windows quite a bit as well. My primary desktop at home runs XP Pro and I admin quite a large network of Windows machines Monday – Friday 8-5. Each OS has it’s pros and cons and each fills it’s niche quite well. I have a feeling that Brandon will probably be agreeing with most of Owen’s rant as well.
Well, he says that he doesn’t think Linux is better or worse, and he uses colorful language like “Linux zealots,” so, no, I don’t quite agree with him. I use Windows and Linux, too, but right now, instead of writing a whole rant about Linux there are two things that are indisputable. One, I’m going to have to format my Windows machine again soon, because of spyware. I can’t run a game (UT, of all games) I used to run on the same computer because I can’t get rid of the spyware. And two,

Linux is harder to use, that’s a huge point for Windows. However, if you’re knowledgeable with computers–admittedly VERY knowledgeable–Linux is superior.
I’d like to learn to use Linux…I think…
What makes me wary of Linux is the fact that Windows is a nice, safe, warm blanket; its familiarity makes me lazy. I’ve long ago sorted out driver problems and everthing runs just fine. I keep the spyware at bay with a few available tools, and have yet to suffer from a virus infection. It’s kind of like “it’s not broke, so why fix it?”
Maybe someday I’ll buy a used laptop and install a Linux distro of some description into that and play with it.
Or not. :p
